How to Care for Linen Clothing: Storage, Stain Removal & Wash Guide
Share
Linen is one of the few fabrics that genuinely gets better with age. Softer with every wash, stronger over time, and more beautiful the longer you own it — but only if you treat it right.
This is everything you need to know about linen clothing care.
How to Store Linen Clothing
How you store linen between wears matters more than most people realise.
- Always store it clean and completely dry. Even a trace of moisture causes mildew. If it's damp when it goes into the wardrobe, it won't smell right when it comes out.
- Use breathable storage. No plastic bags or airtight bins. Cotton bags or open shelving let the fabric breathe and prevent moisture build-up.
- Keep it away from direct sunlight. UV exposure fades colour and weakens fibres over time. A cool, dark wardrobe is ideal.
- Don't overpack. Linen needs room. Cramming it in causes deep creases that are hard to remove.
- Air it out every few months. Hang pieces for a few hours. Prevents musty odour and lets you catch any issues early.
How to Remove Stubborn Stains from Linen
Act fast — fresh stains are always easier. Here's a method that works without damaging the fabric:
- Identify the stain first. Oil needs a different approach than wine or sweat. Knowing what you're dealing with saves you from making it worse.
- Dab, don't rub. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Press a clean cloth into the stain — rubbing spreads it and damages fibres.
- Add baking soda. Sprinkle over the vinegar-soaked area. The fizzing reaction lifts the stain from within the fabric.
- Let it sit for 30 minutes. Give it time to work through the fibres.
- Rinse with cold water. Hot water sets stains. Always cold.
- Wash as normal. Follow the care label. Most linen does well on a gentle cycle at 30°C.
How to Wash Linen Clothing
- Machine wash on a gentle or delicate cycle at 30°C
- Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent
- Avoid fabric softeners — they coat the fibres and reduce breathability over time
- Line dry in shade, not direct sun
- Iron on medium heat while slightly damp for a crisp finish — or skip the iron entirely for the natural relaxed look linen is known for
The Short Version
Linen asks for very little — just a bit of attention. Store it clean, give it air, treat stains gently and quickly. Do that, and a good linen piece will outlast most things in your wardrobe by years.
